In 1971 Don McLean released an album titled “American Pie” which featured an eight-and-a-half-minute song with the same title about the death of pop music. Famously, in 1959 a plane crashed, killing musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson Jr., The song makes references to different music genres, Chevy trucks, John Lennon and Marxism, and all the good times kids used to have before the bad news within the music industry. Music was extremely popular with teenagers due to the baby boom in the ‘40s, so a lot of teenage culture involved music and dancing. The most known lyric from the song, “The day the music died,” is a touching sentiment to the heartbreak felt across the country for the young singer—Holly died at only 22 years old.
