Have you ever wondered what would happen if Edward Cullen and the Green Goblin got stuck in a confined space together? No? Well, chances are, we’ve got you thinking, and the 2019 movie “The Lighthouse” can answer that very question.
“The Lighthouse” follows the story of two lighthouse keepers—Thomas Wake, played by Willem Dafoe, and Thomas Howard, played by Robert Pattinson—as they slowly fall into the insanity of isolation. It was written by brothers Robert and Max Eggers, the former who also worked as the movie’s director.
Filmed entirely on 35 millimeter black and white film, “The Lighthouse” creates a sense of discomfort that is as spooky as it is interesting. The off-kilter framing and awkward cuts force the audience to face some unsettling characters up close and personal. Indeed, this movie is a brilliant psychological thriller that is full of discomfort—perfect for the month of October.
Dafoe and Pattinson have great chemistry on screen, revealing all the emotions that come with heavy drinking, repression, and loneliness. Unclear if the happenings of the film are supernatural or just the creation of their spiraling minds, “The Lighthouse” features excellent performances from both Dafoe and Pattinson. More than anything, “The Lighthouse” is just a bit weird, and, to make it even more sinister, was inspired by true events.
Set in a blustery New England backdrop, “The Lighthouse” is the perfect horror movie to watch in the fog, especially if you’re not in the mood for a slasher this Halloween.
