In the heart of Orange County, two remarkable animal rescues are significantly impacting countless animals’ lives. Westie Rescue of Orange County (WROC) and Wonky Hearts Animal Haven (WHAH) are dedicated to providing second chances to animals in need. These organizations rescue and rehabilitate animals, offering them the love and care they deserve. They are transforming the lives of animals and enriching the community with their compassionate work.
Westie Rescue of Orange County
The Westie Rescue of Orange County is an organization that focuses on rescuing and rehoming West Highland White Terriers, commonly known as Westies. They work endlessly to save these dogs from shelters, neglectful situations and owner surrenders. Once dogs are in their care, WROC provides medical treatment, rehabilitation and foster homes. Their mission is to give every Westie a second chance at a happy and loving life.
Kay Deloach, the owner of WROC, has devoted her life to rescuing and rehabilitating Westies. Her passion for these charming dogs shines in every aspect of her work as she tries to find each dog a loving forever home.
Deloach said, “We’re particularly fond of seniors and we will take any Westie of any age.”
Wonky Hearts Animal Haven
Wonky Hearts Haven is another animal rescue that provides shelter and rehabilitation to animals with special needs. This means focusing on animals often overlooked due to medical conditions, disabilities, or behavioral issues. At WHAH, every animal receives individualized care including medical treatment and a loving environment to thrive in. The organization works diligently to find forever homes for these animals while ensuring they are matched with families who understand they require extra care.
Jennifer Kanowsky, the owner of WHAH, has created a sanctuary for animals with special needs. She ensures that each animal at Wonky Hearts Animal Haven receives a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life.
Kanowsky said, “I’ve always been fascinated and loved all animals even as a kid… I think people can contribute a little more time and effort [towards them]. Especially with their own animals.”
Ashlee Dunn, a biology teacher, and Louis Arroyo, a Spanish teacher, both at Huntington Beach High School (HBHS), spoke highly about their opinions and experiences with animal rescue. Both have been involved in rescue for a long time and have a strong passion for it.
Dunn said, “With Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, I participated in a number of rescues as well as releases after animals recovered from their rehabilitation.”
Arroyo said, “My neighborhood has a lot of cats, they don’t receive a lot of care. Whenever I can, I capture, spay or neuter them and re-home them or release them.”
Both WROC and WHAH represent the profound impact that animal rescue organizations can have on the lives of vulnerable pets. Through their unwavering commitment, tireless efforts and compassionate care, these organizations save countless animals and enrich the lives of families that adopt them. There are many ways that the community can donate to help these animals. They can donate, foster, and volunteer. After all, these organizations thrive off of help from others.
