This year’s Future Oiler Night began with Huntington Beach High School’s (HBHS) talented band, followed by a brief welcoming speech from principal, Brenna Orr. After this short speech, it was time to get class hunting. Every class possible for incoming freshmen was ready for the crowd of hundreds of 8th graders ready to learn about their potential future courses. The gym opened at 5:30 p.m. on February 4th and closed a few hours later at 7 p.m..

“I felt that [it was] very welcoming, and there’s a lot of stuff to go over and look at,” said Ahmed Kambe, a future oiler attendee.
Full of smiles, each table wonderfully represented their class with beautiful displays ranging from Agricultural Biology’s home-grown garden to a chance wheel from the APA department with the ability to get candy or a free ticket to a show when they sign up.
As amazing as it all is, picking out the perfect classes for freshman year can be challenging. Incoming students used this night to carefully consider their upcoming courses. The transition from middle school to high school can be overwhelming, so picking classes and extracurriculars wisely will help craft an efficient and balanced schedule to combat stress.
Some middle schoolers were atonished by the number of choices they had avaible to them.
“In middle school, there’s not a lot of different options… Like, there’s very few electives, but here, there’s like a lot of different teams and classes to choose.” said Iyla Dhaka, another 8th grader.

Unsurprisingly, Huntington’s twenty-nine different sports took up half the gym. With sports such as Dance displaying impressive trophies, each team welcomed their possible future teammates for possible wins and achievements.
Of course, we can’t forget about the Academy for the Performing Arts, which also had a table at the fair.
“You find people that like the same things as you. [You‘ll] really get along with them; it’s a really good community to be in,” said Katelyn Anderson, a freshman handing out flyers for Orchestra.
Every class was as welcoming as the next as they displayed themselves for Future Oiler Night, encourage incoming Freshmen to join some exciting new classes!
