The nominations this year reflected general fan engagement in 2026. Many of the awards were based on what audiences streamed over the year rather than decisions solely made by the industry. However, many people believe that the awards are not a perfect reflection of popularity simply because they can favor more well-known artists, instead of artists that aren’t as popular.
Lily Jacobs, a freshman at Huntington Beach High School (HBHS), said, “I think the artists nominated this year mostly do represent what people are actually listening to, because a lot of the nominees are popular on streaming platforms and social media, where trends spread quickly. Still, it’s not always fair since some smaller or less mainstream artists who people still listen to don’t always get nominated.”
Viewers also had different reactions to the night’s performers and attendees, with some praising their energy and presence while others felt that it didn’t quite meet their expectations.
“I was really happy when I saw so many of my favorite artists all in one place, being that this is the kind of music I listen to. The only thing I really noticed was that everyone was super hyper-focused on Taylor Swift being there, which I get because she’s super famous, but I enjoyed the celebrities at the actual event,” said Charlotte Dimas, a freshman at HBHS.
Reactions were diverse when it came to the night’s overall award winners, including Taylor Swift taking home 7 awards, Alex Warren and Sabrina Carpenter. Many viewers were content with the results and felt that the winners reflected the artist’s success over the years, while others felt that certain nominees were overlooked or unworthy of the win based on their actual talent.
Lily Fraser, a freshman at HBHS, said, “I think most of the time, fan-voted awards like this are fair. They interact with the fans and keep the audience more engaged, knowing they have an impact. Fan-voted awards are also nice for artists who have made an impact on people but aren’t as acknowledged by the industry.”
