In 1956, Jalacy ‘Screamin’ Jay’ Hawkins released a song that is regarded as an important piece of rock and roll history, but also the first goth song. “I Put a Spell On You” had an extremely theatrical live performance that featured props, screaming, animalistic noises, and other whimsical elements. James Henke of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame curated a list of the 500 most influential songs that shaped rock with the help of people in the industry, which featured “I Put a Spell On You,” although the Rock Hall of Fame itself has not yet inducted Screamin’ Jay Hawkins himself into the list of over 300 artists.
