On November 8 the Canadian indie-rock group, The Aubreys, released a single titled “Running.” It’s a jaunty, highly anticipated song as they put out clips the past few weeks teasing their newest release. It stands out as a lighter tune from their last single, “Kato,” that came out this summer. The song is fun with silly lyrics like “I got a mullet/Oh god, I got me a mullet” and a “Breaking Bad” reference in the second verse. Sadly, the song is pretty short—coming in at only two minutes and twenty seconds—but the refrain-chorus is very happy-go-lucky. It’s made up entirely of two verses and a refrain, just verse/refrain/verse/refrain—no real chorus, pre-chorus, or bridge. It’s interesting looking at new songs with a lyrical structure that doesn’t match the industry’s standard, but it still works. There isn’t even an instrumental solo!
As Finn Wolfhard (singer) and Malcolm Craig (drummer) release more and more songs, fans wait patiently for a new album. The Aubreys currently only have one album, “Karaoke Alone,” but hopefully these single releases are a hint at a new LP coming soon.
