Are you currently learning Spanish, French, or American Sign Language? Well, the World Languages Department here at Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) is in need of support. Without the presence of languages in our academic career building relationships and communicating would be more difficult. As a result, HBHS students are encouraged to learn more about the World Language Department.
Learning a new language can do things like increase cultural awareness, improve empathy, and even enhance English grammar. Students are able to immerse themselves in a plethora of different cultures, allowing themselves to see the world through another perspective. According to the University of North Georgia, studying a language in High School is “scientifically proven to improve students’ overall academic careers.”
To encourage community members to support the World Languages Department, HBHS held a fundraiser at Chipotle. The event lasted from 4-8 pm, and 33% of the proceeds from each sale was put towards the HBHS World Languages Department.
Spanish 1 and 2 teacher at HBHS, Mr. Arroyo, said “Learning new languages is the best way to make new connections. When you speak to someone in their native language they will repay you with unique experiences.”
The Chipotle Fundraiser gave the students of HBHS a wonderful chance to support the school and their learning.
HBHS sophomore, Logan Bennett, said “Learning other languages will be very useful in our adult lives and allow us to broaden our cultural horizons.”
Without exposure to multiple cultural identities, our learning would be much more limited. Languages can bring diverse groups together. Learning a new language shows respect and honor to cultures all over the world. As a community of young scholars, our school needs to come together to support the World Languages Department for our own academic needs and future careers.
