Valentine’s Day can be a wonderfully romantic day for some, and awful for others. Luckily, there’s a movie for any occasion and any feeling towards the season of love.
“500 Days of Summer” directed by Marc Webb
The quintessential anti-Valentine’s Day movie, “500 Days of Summer” follows Tom, a young man (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he falls in love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel).
“500 Days of Summer” is a unique spin on the classic rom-com, and is both entertaining and interesting. Some unconventional filming techniques add to the intrigue, and although Tom isn’t a character to root for, the story still draws the audience in.
Perfect for anyone not in the mood for a successful romance story, “500 Days of Summer” is available to watch on Hulu or Amazon Prime.
“Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown” directed by Phil Roman
Although only thirty minutes long, “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,” is a nostalgic animated classic part of the same hall of fame as “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.”
The animation follows everyone’s favorite Peanuts characters getting up to their usual antics, including misplaced messages in mailboxes, candy exchanges, and a Valentine’s Day party. Its short run-time is perfect if you’re in the mood for a quick little romp filled with laughter in the world of the Peanuts.
“Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown” is available to watch on Apple TV.
“Moulin Rouge” directed by Baz Luhrmann
Baz Luhrmann’s maximalist and in-your-face style lends itself perfectly to this exhilarating
romantic comedy. Starring Ewan McGregor as a penniless writer in 19th century France and Nicole Kidman as the beautiful and alluring courtesan he falls in love with, “Moulin Rouge” is filled with high kicks and big laughs.
Although it is a musical, “Moulin Rouge” includes 90s/2000s bops in the classic French burlesque style, creating an absolute spectacle for the entire run time of the movie.
A combination of a Shakespeare play and a high-energy circus, “Moulin Rouge” is available to watch on Apple TV or Amazon Prime Video.
“No Hard Feelings” directed by Gene Stupnitsky
The ultimate almost anti-romantic comedy, “No Hard Feelings,” stars Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie, a thirty-year-old deadbeat who’s paid to romance the 19-year-old son of a wealthy couple. Things, of course, do not go as planned.
Genuinely funny and surprisingly heartfelt, “No Hard Feelings” manages to subvert expectations whilst still hitting all the beloved beats of a rom-com. It’s good fun, and has something for everyone, whether you’re in the mood for a sweet relationship: either friendship or something more.
“No Hard Feelings” is available to watch on Netflix.
“The Prom” directed by Ryan Murphy
The second and last movie-musical to grace this list, “The Prom” follows a swarm of Broadway
actors who help two teenage girls attend their prom as a couple. Starring Jo Ellen Pellmen and Ariana DeBose as the girls Emma and Alyssa, “The Prom” manages to be light-hearted and silly, albeit a little cringy.
“The Prom” is also full of recognizable actors such as Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, and Meryl Streep, making it perfect for any bona fide theater kid looking for something entertaining to watch this Valentine’s Day.
“The Prom” is available to watch on Netflix.
