On February 5, Huntington held its annual Future Oiler Night for incoming freshmen and new students of the 2024-2025 school year. Accompanied by their parents and peers, prospective students were introduced to the many activities Huntington has to offer. Everything from Model United Nations to CTE Agriculture was well represented in the gym—which was decked out with posters and hand-held flyers.
Student representatives from clubs, sports, and classes were tasked with persuading new students to join in on their elective(s) of choice.
Track and field and flag football representative Alia Pasternak, a junior at Huntington, said “Future Oiler Night is important for the growth of programs. It really helps draw incoming interest, which keeps the programs alive and thriving”.
For upperclassmen, interacting with the next generation of Huntington students is a reminder of the passage of time.
“The biggest memorable moments [from Future Oiler Night was] seeing my friends’ siblings at the event and answering any questions they had about high school. It’s surreal to think that they are going to be in high school next year” said Pasternak.
Slick’s own Melany Mariscal, grade 12, worked at the Link Crew and Journalism tables.
She said, “Future Oiler Night is important because we get to show off all the amazing electives and sports that the school has to offer”.
For some students, interacting with incoming 8th graders and their parents may be nerve-wracking—but Monday’s event was full of positive interactions.
“I loved interacting with all the younger students and parents because some of them were super sweet and very appreciative when talking to them about the wonderful opportunities HBHS has,” said Mariscal.
Future Oiler Night was a success in spreading information about Huntington’s programs to new students. The campus looks forward to seeing new members of Huntington’s sports, electives, and extracurriculars.
