On Tuesday, May 21, Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) hosted their “Athletic Signing Day.” This event was held for the eight new seniors who received offers from colleges in order to further their athletic careers. The gym was decorated with balloon arches, posters with the names and colleges that the seniors chose to go to, and cheerleaders celebrating them the whole time.
HBHS student Bennet Tchaikovsky said, “I most enjoyed being with the other athletes and being able to showcase our abilities to everyone who came to see us sign.”
Tchaikovsky will be attending New York University to play men’s volleyball for the next four years.
He said, “It was a top 4 business school in the country and I could play volleyball there. I am most excited for the new changes that I will be seeing every day and living in the city.”
Many student-athletes have played their sport for years, so sharing their announcements and accomplishments was the best part of the event for them. Families, coaches, staff, and friends were all there to celebrate the seniors who worked very hard to achieve their goals. They all enjoyed being there to support each other and hear how excited they were.
HBHS student, Devyn McCormick said, “I liked seeing the energy and support from everyone around me, as well as others being able to achieve their goals of signing.”
Devyn will be attending Vanguard University to join women’s wrestling in the fall. She said, “My coaches, family, and teammate’s support led me to want to take the next step and continue wrestling at a college level. ”
Choosing a college wasn’t easy for some of the athletes. They were offered many wonderful opportunities, but it was important that they selected a college that was right for them.
HBHS student, Kami Milius, will be attending Southern Virginia University for women’s beach volleyball in the fall. Milius said, “The campus is nothing like I have seen before. Everything around it blooms in the fall and spring. I also have had the opportunity to meet some of my teammates and I’m very excited to room with them and get closer with them.”
She also said, “I had a lot of amazing coaches push me to further my athletic abilities in college, but I also felt that my training was not finished after my high school season. I knew that I wanted to play more, so I chose to play in college. I also made a big connection with the coaches at the university and I feel that by having this close connection I will be able to keep playing the sport I love.”
This event was an astounding way to showcase all the hard-working athletes at HBHS this school year. Many cannot wait to see all the students become incredible athletes and the best versions of themselves out there in the world. We wish them the best of luck in their next four years and hope they know that Oiler Nation will support them throughout their journey.
